[Milwaukee, WI] – On Tuesday, July 4th, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Reproductive Justice Action – Milwaukee, and Freedom Road Socialist Organization will be hosting the second annual People’s Independence Day. The event will begin at 12:00PM at Red Arrow Park with a rally that will be followed by a march.

People’s Independence Day is an annual event recognizing that the vast majority of people in this country aren’t free. Last year, the event recognized the significance of the overturning of Roe v Wade as a sign that women aren’t free. This year we have witnessed a heightened assault on people’s movements – attacks against LGBTQ people, police accountability, immigrants, reproductive rights, students, etc. Given the breadth of reactionary attacks on people, we will be featuring speakers from a variety of community organizations working directly on these issues. Following today’s supreme court decision ending affirmative action, we will be calling special attention to its impacts.

July 4th is promoted as a day of freedom, but to those of us who are oppressed in this country, what is the meaning of this day?

The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (MAARPR) campaigns against police crimes committed primarily against the poor and Black, Indigenous, and people of color. We demand the creation of a civilian police accountability council, or CPAC, to ensure that our community is in direct control of our police force.
