MILWAUKEE, Wis. – On Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a resolution denouncing the “horrors of socialism” in a 328-86 vote. Supervisor Juan Miguel-Martinez made the following statement:

“I am beyond saddened by the actions of the US House of Representatives this week. This nationhas moved far past the “Red Scare” of the 1940’s and 50’s; and Socialists, like me, will not be bullied or intimidated by the national government. Milwaukee has a long-standing tradition ofSocialism that didn’t bring “horrors”. Instead, it resulted in additional parkland and the implementation of a sewer system that we all rely on,” said Supervisor Martinez. “My seat on the Milwaukee County Board is nonpartisan, and as such, I fight to improve the quality of life for absolutely everyone, whether we agree politically or not. I can confidently say that I’ll continue to fight for ‘horrors’ such as proper funding for education, taking care of the deferred maintenance in our parks, fair housing practices, union jobs, paid parental leave, Right to Counsel, and funding the Mitchell Park Domes. I am honored to do so.”

The measure was led by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

House Democrats joined House Republicans in a 328-86 vote to pass the measure. Additionally, 14 members chose to abstain by voting “present”.

Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez was elected to the Milwaukee County Board in 2022. He is one of two self-described Socialists currently serving on the Board.
