MILWAUKEE, WI – Heading into the new year, Senator Tammy Baldwin and Congresswoman Gwen Moore announced securing millions in congressionally directed spending for Milwaukee County projects that enhance public safety, housing access, and transportation. The funds are part of the bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2023 passed in December. The strong partnership between Milwaukee County and its federal partners remains strong and continues to deliver for the residents of Southeast Wisconsin.

“I’m glad to have strong partners in Washington who are committed to securing much needed resources for Milwaukee County. Over the past two years, Senator Baldwin and Congresswoman Moore have worked with us to identify needs for our community and fight tooth-and-nail to deliver on behalf of our residents,” said County Executive David Crowley. “Without their help we could not have secured millions for the construction of the recently opened Mental Health Emergency Center or the East-West Bus Rapid Transit slated to open later this year. Heading into the new year, we are thrilled to see more critical resources come to Milwaukee County to address acute community needs. Thank you to both of these champions for their dedication to delivering on behalf of all of our residents.”

The Omnibus Appropriations Act delivers on $2 million for Milwaukee County to partner with a local opioid treatment provider to create a mobile opioid treatment unit. Milwaukee County tragically recorded over 450 overdose deaths in 2022, the mobile unit addresses the epidemic by focusing on underserved areas severely impacted by opioid use and overdoses.

The bill also allocates $5 million to rehabilitate foreclose properties and prioritize the sale to first-time homebuyers. The project helps address the affordable housing needs in Milwaukee County and gives residents the opportunity become homeowners. Lastly, it provides over $3.8 million to purchase buses as the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) continues to replace aging buses with clean, efficient additions to the MCTS fleet.
