MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Sheriff Denita Ball will be the guest speaker at a Newsmaker luncheon set for Wednesday, April 5, hosted by the Milwaukee Press Club and WisPolitics.com.

Ball, who was elected in November to a full term, is the first female sheriff in Milwaukee County and the first African American female sheriff in Wisconsin. She was appointed sheriff by Gov. Tony Evers in October when former Sheriff Earnell Lucas resigned.

Prior to that, Ball served as chief deputy to Lucas, overseeing the Sheriff’s Department daily operations. Before joining the Sheriff’s Department in 2019, she was a member of the Milwaukee Police Department and retired at the rank of deputy inspector after 25 years of service.

A native of Arkansas, Ball received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, a master’s degree in criminal justice administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, according to her bio. She is on the adjunct faculty at Cardinal Stritch University.

Ball will take questions from a panel of journalists and from the audience at the luncheon, to be moderated by Milwaukee Press Club President Maryann Lazarski, series/documentary producer for Milwaukee PBS. The luncheon is set for 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newsroom Pub, 137 E. Wells St. in Milwaukee.
