WISCONSIN – Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI) issued the following statement today, in response to the historic inauguration of Governor Evers to a second term. The re-election of an incumbent Democratic Governor hasn’t happened with a Democratic President in the White House since 1964 and resulted in part from voters’ strong desire to restore abortion access and a woman’s ability to make her own health care decisions.

Statement from Steven Webb II, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of WI

“Voters turned out in support of Governor Evers and Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez because they saw the harm being done by Wisconsin’s criminal abortion ban that is blocking women from accessing abortion care, forcing them to travel across state lines or remain pregnant against their will. Wisconsin voters support reproductive freedom and want improved access to essential health care. It’s up to our elected leaders to respond to the people of Wisconsin.

Through Governor Evers’ leadership we have an opportunity to restore abortion access in Wisconsin for all people and expand access to preventive and diagnostic medical care to address racial health disparities and improve community health outcomes.

It’s time to restore reproductive freedom and advance policies that the community needs like reversing Wisconsin’s status as the worst state for Black maternal and infant health. Improved access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, health exams, STI testing, prenatal and postnatal health care services along with paid sick and family medical leave would improve maternal and child health.

We look forward to continuing to work with the Evers administration to achieve needed change and secure a better future for the people of Wisconsin.”
