MILWAUKEE, WI – Over the objections from the medical community and despite a twenty-three year history of patient safety, a Federal District Court Judge in Texas suspended the FDA’s approval of Mifepristone, one of the two medications that is the standard of care in medication abortion as well as the management of some miscarriages. The full impact of this ruling is yet to be determined, as a Washington State Federal District Court granted an injunction that prevents the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from making changes to the availability of the medication Mifepristone in the states involved in that lawsuit.  Because the ruling out of the Northern District of Texas does not take effect for seven (7) days, the FDA’s approval remains intact until at least April 14, 2023.

“Opponents of reproductive health will continue to ignore medical experts and harm patients until they achieve their goal of outlawing abortion in every state. We want to assure patients that while we review these legal rulings, PPWI will continue to provide patients with the information and assistance they need to access safe and legal abortion.” stated Tanya Atkinson, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

People deserve the right to access information and medical care to control their own body, life, and future. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin’s doors are open and is working to provide patients with the sexual and reproductive health services and information they need to determine the course of their own life.
