Madison, WI – Today, Governor Evers vetoed AB 465, the “Help Not Harm Bill,” which would have protected minors from long-term, irreversible damage from unproven medical gender transition procedures. Rep. Allen released the following statement:
“Global, long-term, peer-reviewed, qualitative studies have shown clear harm to minors for medical gender transition and have shown no proven benefits. If Evers wanted to trust the science, then he would have signed the ‘Help Not Harm’ bill into law. Instead, our governor has shown that he cares more about getting support from activists instead of doing what’s right for Wisconsin kids.
“The ‘Help Not Harm’ bill received broad support from many different groups including adult trans individuals, LGB groups, detransitioners, parent advocates, feminists, doctors, counselors, social workers, educators, and faith groups who all care about helping, not harming, our children.
“I’m sad that there will now be more stories of detransitioners in the coming years who could have been spared the pain of medical gender transition by AB 465. We could have given these kids the time to fully understand the inherent risks of medical intervention.
“While the majority of Wisconsinites recognize the importance of helping kids, it’s sad that our governor prefers to engage in politics instead of protecting kids.”
