[Madison, WI] – State Representative Calvin Callahan (R-Tomahawk) joined his Assembly Republican colleagues on Wednesday in advancing legislation that, if enacted, would address the growing violent crime in Wisconsin.

“It’s past time we stop focusing on letting criminals out of prison, like Governor Evers has been doing, and ensure we keep our families and communities safe by getting tough on crime,” said Rep. Callahan. “With rates of violent crime, murder, and aggravated assault in Wisconsin at the highest level in over 35 years, my Republican colleagues and I are committed to this goal.”

Some of the legislation passed included:

· Assembly Bill 55: doubles penalties for reckless driving and imposes existing impaired driving surcharges on those convicted of reckless driving

· Assembly Bill 56: allows law enforcement to impound a vehicle if the owner is cited for reckless driving and has an existing unpaid citation for reckless driving

· Assembly Bill 58: creates a mandatory minimum sentence of five years for violent felons in possession of a firearm

· Assembly Bill 70: creates a definition of a riot and provides penalties for inciting a riot or committing an act of violence while participating in a riot (closely mirrors the federal definition)
