MADISON – Yesterday, the Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus announced the passage of Assembly Joint Resolution 11. “Black history is Wisconsin history, and Wisconsin history is Black history. Throughout February, members of the WLBC hosted various events in the State Capitol, Milwaukee, and communities elsewhere to celebrate Black History Month.”
“The month of February allows us a chance to celebrate our history in this great state, and I want to thank everyone for all their hard work to put together educational events important to us all,” Rep. Dora Drake, the Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus stated.
Although this bipartisan AJR11 passed in March “Black history occurs every day throughout the year, and it’s never too late to acknowledge the contributions African Americans have made in our communities, our state, and this country,” Rep. Drake further stated.
“We thank the present Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus members, and those officials who came before us, who worked together for several years to get us to this historic point,” Sen. LaTonya Johnson added.
“Black History Month is a time for African Americans to come together as a community to discuss the importance of cooperation and collaboration. The celebration was first nationally recognized in 1976. President Gerald Ford encouraged the public to seize the opportunity to honor the neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area throughout history.”
“Thank you again to our Wisconsin State Assembly and State Senate colleagues who co-sponsored and supported this bipartisan resolution today,” Rep. Drake and Sen. Taylor concluded.
