Madison – Representative Nate Gustafson (R-Fox Crossing) today voted yes on Assembly Bill 14 protecting farmers from defective farm equipment.

“Farmers are the lifeblood of Wisconsin, and it is essential that we give them the support necessary to carry out their work,” Rep Gustafson said. “AB 14 will give our farmers confidence when they invest in new equipment that it will perform as expected, and in turn allow them to become more efficient.”

This bill allows defective implements of husbandry to be repaired and replaced when these implements can no longer do the job they were purchased to do. Wisconsin has already had a lemon law in place that covers cars, trucks, and SUV’s since 1984. This bill is modeled after our current automotive lemon law.

Farm machinery can be one of the largest expenses for farmers, costing much more than the average automobile. While we already have a lemon law in place for cars, we don’t have one for farm equipment like a number of other states in the Midwest have already in law. We need to protect farmers from having to expend huge sums of money.

“Machinery is one of the biggest expenses for a farmer, and with the passage of AB 14, I look forward to more farmers being able to confidently invest in newer, more efficient equipment.”

The bill now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
