Madison – Rep. Nate Gustafson (R-Fox Crossing) partnered with Rep. Travis Tranel (R-Cuba City), Rep. Jon Plumer (R-Lodi), and Rep. Todd Novak (R-Dodgeville) today to author Assembly Joint Resolution 56 recognizing June 2023 as Dairy Month in Wisconsin.

“Dairy is the lifeblood of Wisconsin; it is essential that we recognize and celebrate our dairy farmers who do so much for our state,” Rep. Gustafson said. “Today’s resolution is one way in which we can do so, and I encourage all Wisconsinites to thank dairy farmers this month.”

Since 1937, Wisconsinites have observed June as Dairy Month to recognize the cherished role dairy has played in the state’s agricultural heritage, from the dairy farmers from New York who migrated to Wisconsin to the hardworking dairy producers of today.

As “America’s Dairyland”, Wisconsin has 1.28 million cows and more dairy farms than any other state, at 7,000, 95% of which are family owned. Wisconsin’s dairy industry contributes $45.6 billion to our state’s economy every year. The state’s 1,200 licensed cheesemakers produce a quarter of the United States’ cheese.

“We also need to recognize all those who are involved in other ways to our dairy industry: From cheesemakers to those involved in the shipping of dairy products, these hardworking Wisconsinites are vital for our state’s economy and identity,” Rep Gustafson said. “The dairy industry is active every day of the year, with long hours for all involved. We cannot thank them enough.”

The joint resolution heads to the state Senate for consideration.
