Madison, Wis. – Yesterday, Governor Evers released his recommendations for Wisconsin’s Capital Budget. This budget focuses on building projects around the state. Within the 16th Assembly District, the governor recommended $10.75 million for the Marquette School of Dentistry. In addition, he recommended $5 million for the Bronzeville Center for the Arts – African-American Art Center. In response, Rep. Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:
“I’m excited and encouraged that Governor Evers has included these investments in his Capital Budget. Investing in our communities and our people always pays immeasurable dividends. By investing in the Marquette School of Dentistry, we can address the shortage of dentists facing Wisconsin as we have a lower than average supply in terms of provider/population ratios. This will undoubtedly increase the pipeline of dentists available to provide additional access of care to the people of our state.
“In addition, I applaud investments in our culture, history, and identity. The proposed African- American Art Center in the Bronzeville Center for the Arts will be an amazing addition to our community. It will also further the understanding and story of the Black community as we continue to acknowledge our past, examine our present, and look forward to our future. Artistic expression and entrepreneurial creativity have long been a central part of Black contributions to American history and society. This project will assist in reinforcing our identity and cementing our contributions in the lexicon of Milwaukee and Wisconsin history. It is my hope that this project reaches people of all backgrounds and generations and stimulates productive conversations that unite our people and communities”.
