MADISON, Wis. – Last night, a Milwaukee Police officer was killed during an attempt to arrest a suspect in an armed robbery in progress. The officer was a 37-year-old male with four years of service to the department. In response, Representative Kalan Haywood (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement:

“It is with a heavy heart that I send condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, while trying to make Milwaukee a better and safer place to live.

“As a community we must take time to mourn and reflect, yet we must also remain diligent, and continue to support those who have been tasked with keeping our neighborhoods safe. I wish the Milwaukee Police Department solace and comfort as they deal with the difficult loss of one of their own.

“Incidents such as this one remind us that life is fragile and we must do all we can to keep our communities safe. We must take a holistic approach to reducing poverty, crime and especially gun violence to prevent further tragedies and unnecessary loss of life.”
