MADISON – Today, Governor Tony Evers announced that after 40 years of service to Wisconsin, Secretary of State Doug La Follette will retire. Governor Evers appointed former State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski to succeed La Follette for the remainder of his term. Representative Alex Joers offered the following statement in appreciation of La Follette’s many years of service, and congratulations to Wisconsin’s new Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski.

“Secretary La Follette has always been a steadfast supporter of a clean environment and a healthy democracy. He upheld a legacy of good government and always provided recognition to Wisconsin’s progressive history. I share my appreciation to Secretary La Follette and wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.

“I could not be more thrilled to congratulate Sarah Godlewski on her appointment to be the next Secretary of State. Secretary Godlewski is a staunch defender of our democratic values and brings a shared commitment to families with her to this office. She has already developed an excellent knowledge of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands through her experience as State Treasurer, which is vital to the success of this position for our state.

“I encourage my fellow legislators to join me in a renewed call for adequately funding the Office of the Secretary of State. Our constituents rely on services provided by this office. The Governor’s budget proposal allows for reasonable staffing and office space for the Secretary of State. It just makes sense to ensure an office that is serving Wisconsinites has the necessary funds to operate in a timely fashion. It would be wise of the Joint Finance Committee to approve this proposal.”
