Madison – Rep. Johnson (R-Hebron) voted in favor of new legislation that would give pharmacists the ability to prescribe certain contraceptives.
Currently in Wisconsin, women can only obtain most common birth control through a prescription from a physician or an advanced practice nurse. With increasing access to contraceptives, evidence shows, that doing so, reduces the number of abortions and high costs associated with unplanned pregnancies. Almost 62% of unplanned births are publicly funded in our state.
“We as legislators, have a responsibility to remove any barriers in place and allow women to access this medication without jumping through unnecessary hoops.” Rep. Johnson said. 27 other states in our union have passed legislation allowing birth control prescriptions to be attained from a pharmacy.
This bill now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
