Madison— Representative Dave Maxey (R-New Berlin) joined fellow Assembly Republicans in announcing the “Returning Your Surplus” proposal, which would deliver major tax relief for Wisconsin’s middle-class earners and retirees. Along with introducing a proposed amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution that would require a two-thirds vote of the legislature to increase sales taxes:

“When Governor Evers vetoed the middle-class tax cut in June I was disheartened that the middle class was left behind. My colleagues and I are giving Gov. Evers a chance to redeem himself and return the surplus to the taxpayers, I am extremely proud that we aren’t just addressing the middle-class tax cut, but also providing tax relief to retirees in Wisconsin.”

“The proposal introduced by my Republican colleagues and I will make Wisconsin more competitive and more attractive. Our neighbors are already doing what has been proposed here today. It’s time we do right by the middle-class and retirees. I really love the fact that this proposal incentivizes people to live, play, stay, and retire in Wisconsin.”

“This nation was founded upon the foundational principles of individual liberty and prosperity, by giving the power to the people. This Amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution is an embodiment of the very ideas that our founding fathers foresaw. Recently we have borne witness to local governments increasing sales taxes without the consent of their voters, stripping them of their voices. This legislation finally gives voters a choice… a choice that has not been given to them in the past. I am a firm believer that the will of the voters should take priority and this amendment does just that.”
