MADISON – This afternoon, the Wisconsin State Assembly convened to debate and vote on Assembly Bills 200 through 206, stemming from the 2022 Wisconsin Legislative Council Study Committee on Occupational Licensing. Virtually all of the bills passed on a party line vote.
State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde served on the Study Committee and rose to speak on Assembly Bill 205. He offered his thoughts on the bill package and the study committee:
“First, I want to be clear about how Study Committees should work – they provide a means to introduce legislation, often imperfect, to deal with actual issues that need addressing. Ultimately, the legislation comes through Assembly and Senate Committees where the public are given a chance to provide their opinions. I’ve heard loud and clear from folks that today’s legislation is not what the workers of Wisconsin really need. Wisconsinites are known for our hard, dignified work and the Department of Safety and Public Services is no different. Still, Republicans would prefer to starve the department.
“Rather than provide staffing and spending authority to DSPS, the Republicans would prefer to play political games. Bipartisanship is a two-way street – and I’m disappointed in the other side’s characterization of our working relationship in the occupational licensing space. It’s just another example of the GOP preferring to play politics rather than helping Wisconsinites.”
Representative Moore Omokunde represents the 17th Assembly District on the North and Northwest sides of Milwaukee.
