Madison- Rep. Jerry O’Connor (R-Fond du Lac) issues the following statement regarding Governor Tony Evers vetoes of the Republican biennial state budget bill:
“I am disappointed in Governor Tony Evers’ decision to veto key parts of the Republican biennial budget. Gov. Evers went back on the school funding deal he made with the Legislature and broke his middle class tax cut pledge to the people of Wisconsin. The Governor’s decision not only unnecessarily increases the size of government, but also sticks the hardworking taxpayers of Wisconsin with a massive tax increase.
Governor Evers broke his agreement with Legislative Republicans on school funding. His irresponsible veto will dramatically increase property taxes. In fact, the veto would allow property taxes to skyrocket over the next 400 years. Thanks to Gov. Evers, Wisconsin homeowners will experience massive property tax increases in the coming years.
Additionally, I am disappointed that Gov. Evers is going back on his pledge to sign a middle class income tax cut. The Republican budget reduced income taxes by $3.5 billion over the biennium, targeted at the middle brackets. Gov. Evers gutted this tax plan, all but eliminating income tax relief on Wisconsin families from this budget.
Vetoing the third bracket means those with truly middle-class incomes will see negligible reductions in their tax bill. Families making $50,000 per year, struggling to make ends meet due to the record-high inflation of the past few years, will now receive practically no tax relief thanks to Gov. Evers.
Gov. Evers’ vetoes are reckless fiscal policy and hurt the hardworking taxpayers of Wisconsin.”
