“We need to prepare our youth for the challenges they will face,” said Representative Penterman. “Too many individuals lack confidence in their personal finances. I am proud to have co-authored Assembly Bill 109, which will provide every student with the resources they need to gain the knowledge and confidence to succeed financially.”

Assembly Bill 109 requires each high school student to complete one-half credit of personal financial literacy course before graduation that includes financial mindset, education and employment, money management, saving and investing, credit and debt, and risk management and insurance. Twenty states including Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, and Ohio require all students to complete some sort of personal financial literacy curriculum.

“It is long overdue that Wisconsin requires all graduating students know how to invest money, balance a checkbook, responsibly use credit, and spend within one’s means,” said Representative Penterman. “We give our students the opportunity to be physically fit. Today, I voted to give all Wisconsin students the opportunity to be financially fit.”
