MADISON, WI – Rep. Plumer released the following statement after voting to pass the 2023-24 state budget in the Assembly:

“The budget I supported today in the Assembly accomplishes two important goals. It sustainably funds our state’s priorities and provides the largest tax cut in Wisconsin history for taxpayers.

One of my top priorities as a member of the Assembly is to ensure we are good stewards of taxpayer dollars while funding the important functions of state government. Our budget accomplishes that by increasing funding for schools and local road repairs, reducing borrowing, funding crucial mental health programs, lowering healthcare costs, providing funding to combat
PFAS contamination, and much more.

Thanks to responsible financing, Wisconsin enjoyed a significant budget-surplus this year, and it was a priority to return those dollars to hard-working taxpayers. The $4.4 billion tax cut we passed today is the largest in state history. It holds the line on property taxes and directs 75% of the income tax reduction to those in the middle bracket, meaning middle-class families and hardworking Wisconsinites will see most of the savings.

Additionally, this budget reduces the size of government by nearly 800 positions, pays off $400 million of debt, blocks a $2 billion tax increase, eliminates DEI programs and positions in the UW-System, and blocks a laundry-list of liberal wish-list items proposed by the Governor.

I am also proud of the fact that my amendment providing funding and support for water quality and water management programs here in the 42nd District is part of the budget passed today. This truly is a budget made for Wisconsin. I encourage Governor Evers to sign it into law.”
