Madison – State Representative Nik Rettinger (R-Mukwonago), a Southeastern Wisconsin freshman lawmaker, was a proud co-author of the Right to Read legislation approved by the Assembly today. AB 321 will bring Science of Reading curriculum to Wisconsin and end the failed experiment of leveled literacy. Our state’s terrible reading scores have hit rock bottom, demonstrating a clear need to return to phonics, intervention, and other proven methods within the Science of Reading program to ensure proficient reading scores amongst Wisconsin’s students.
Following passage, Rep. Rettinger issued the following statement:
“This bill is an absolute victory for children across Wisconsin. I have spoken previously about how critical it is that students can read, write, comprehend, and adequately learn to be on a path to success in life. This bill acknowledges the failures of shifting childhood literacy techniques over the last several decades and looks to right the ship moving forward. Several districts and teachers have already pivoted towards this proven program and the results are clear. The Right to Read Act builds on these efforts to take the Science of Reading statewide. Knowing how to read is one of the biggest factors to lifting individuals out of poverty. Now is the time to get Wisconsin students back on track.”
The Energy Choice bill, known as Assembly Bill 45, prohibits a municipality or county from placing draconian restriction on the connection or reconnection of a utility service based on the type of sources of energy to be provided. Simply put, it would prevent a ban on gas stoves and gas heat in our homes.
“Energy choice is so important. Especially in light of the fact that municipalities are actively pursuing these policies in whole or in part, we must proactively act to ensure government does not interfere in consumer decisions. Additionally, we have been warned on multiple occasions that the electrical grid cannot take the breakneck switch that individuals are advocating to all electric sources. By preventing needless bans of energy sources, we are ensuring that choice of energy is driven by the free market and consumers, not bureaucrats.”
