Madison – State Representative Nik Rettinger (R-Mukwonago) issued a strong rebuke regarding the changes Governor Evers made to the Biennial Budget Act. Among the most notable changes were the governor striking out the income tax cuts targeted specifically to provide relief to the Middle Class while also sticking hard-working tax payers with a massive property tax increase for the next four hundred years.

Following the governor’s signature, Rep. Rettinger issued the following statement:

“Governor Evers demonstrated again just how radical and unserious he is by vetoing BILLIONS in tax relief. In a time of massive inflation due to mismanagement of the economy and reckless spending in Washington by President Biden, hard-working families are struggling to make ends meet. By vetoing the middle class tax cut, Evers is more interested in keeping the governments hand in your pocket book then helping you to keep more of your own money. Worse, this was done under the guise of stopping a giveaway to the rich. By vetoing the 3rd tax bracket in the GOP plan, a family making $50K will receive practically no tax relief thanks to Governor Evers. The attempt to gaslight the public and defend his attack on average hard-working Wisconsinite is shameful. Evers and democrats continue to believe the government knows better how to spend your hard earned money instead of you, the taxpayer.”

Beyond vetoing our Middle Class Tax Cut, Governor Evers also broke his word with a reckless and absurd veto that will skyrocket property taxes over the next 400 years. Taxpayers should remember this when getting their tax bills this December and in years to come. Facing a budget surplus, Republicans voted to send $4.4 billion back to taxpayers in a historic tax cut, while Democrats can’t help but keep it in Madison to frivolously spend on expanding wasteful government programs. The differences in our priorities couldn’t be any clearer.

“I am disappointed but cannot say I am surprised. For all of the individuals who bemoan legislative republicans for their ‘unwillingness to compromise,’ I will remind them of this day. How the governor went back on his word, then gleefully bragged about it, at the expense of struggling Wisconsinites, should not be soon forgotten.”

Finally, it was disappointing that Evers chose to veto Republicans’ efforts to combat woke priorities at the University of Wisconsin System. Our colleges should be focused on addressing our actual workforce needs, not dividing and shaming students on the taxpayer dime.
