MADISON – Following the passage of Senate Bill 70, the 2023-25 biennial budget bill, State Representative Daniel Riemer (D-West Allis), who voted no on the bill, released the following statement:
“Access to affordable, quality healthcare remains one of the top issues Wisconsinites, including my constituents, care most about. Governor Evers and legislative Democrats would have expanded BadgerCare, providing coverage to an additional 90,000 Wisconsinites. This would have improved health and financial security for tens of thousands of people. Republicans failed Wisconsinites by, once again, refusing to include this expansion in the final budget bill. Their decision means that Wisconsin has lost out on $2.2 billion federal dollars. Sadly, it will force Wisconsinites to continue choosing between going to the doctor and supporting their families.”
“With this budget, Republicans have chosen to remove provisions that would have helped grow jobs and keep people in their homes. Governor Evers and legislative Democrats would have extended eligibility for the Earned Income Tax Credit, easing the tax burden for working parents with children by $87 million dollars. We would have expanded the Homestead Tax Credit by $99 million to provide much-needed financial support to seniors and low-income homeowners and renters. Republicans failed Wisconsinites by refusing to include increases to either tax credit in the final budget bill, instead opting to fund an enormous tax break that funnels millions into the pockets of Wisconsin’s wealthiest citizens.”
