MADISON – Representative Jessie Rodriguez (R-Oak Creek) issued the following statement in response to Governor Tony Evers’ 51 budget vetoes:
“Yesterday, Governor Evers effectively vetoed what would have been the largest tax cut in state history. The Republican tax plan included in the budget bill we sent to Evers’ desk would have cut income taxes by $3.5 billion over the biennium by decreasing the tax rate for all four tax brackets. Tony Evers gutted the income tax cut by vetoing the decreases for the top two brackets, providing very little tax relief for truly middle-class families earning in the third income tax bracket. At a time when inflation of everyday goods is through the roof, this is a slap in the face to the hardworking taxpayers across Wisconsin.
“And as if gutting the income tax cut wasn’t enough, Tony Evers also ensures massive property tax increases throughout Wisconsin for the next four centuries. Legislative leaders negotiated with Evers in good faith to arrive at a K-12 education budget plan that we could all support. I am disappointed to see the governor turn around and use the revenue limit increases agreed upon in this budget to increase revenue limits for the next four-hundred years. Wisconsinites are already burdened by high property taxes. With his veto pen, Governor Evers has doomed homeowners to a lifetime of property tax increases.
“These two vetoes in concert with one another will hold Wisconsin back from becoming the competitive tax climate Legislative Republicans have worked on creating for the last decade. I hope Wisconsin taxpayers remember this moment when tax season rolls around.”
