Madison – Representative John Spiros (R-Marshfield) released the following statement after two common-sense crime bills he authored were passed on the floor of the Assembly:

“Transparency in government is essential, especially when public safety is at risk,” said Rep. Spiros. “I was pleased to see my bill to address several major issues within the Parole Commission pass with bipartisan support.”

Assembly Bill 47 addresses a lack of transparency in the Wisconsin Parole Commission and the Commission’s failure to notify victims and their families of parole hearings. The bill passed 77-20.

“People who burn down businesses and destroy communities are not peaceful protestors, they are rioters,” Rep. Spiros said. “Wisconsin needs a path of recourse to deal with the damage that ensues when people riot.”

Assembly Bill 70 defines what a riot is and provides penalties for intentionally inciting a riot and intentionally committing an act of violence in a riot. The bill does not infringe on the constitutionally protected right to peacefully protest.

Both bills will now move through the legislative process in the Senate before being presented to the Governor.
