Madison, WI –Today, State Representative David Steffen (R-Howard) voted in favor of a bipartisan bill that will require Wisconsin high school students to complete a one-half credit course in personal financial literacy prior to graduation. Although some schools already offer an optional finance course, only about 34% of Wisconsin schools currently require such a course.
“I am proud to have supported this legislation that will help ensure our students are prepared for the real-world after high school. Understanding the fundamentals of savings, investments, debt, insurance, and more are key to setting our kids up for financial success,” said Rep. Steffen.
This legislation has garnered strong bipartisan support and overwhelmingly passed the full Assembly by a vote of 95 to 1. Adding this graduation requirement would put Wisconsin in-line with 19 other states that already have this type of curriculum requisite.
“Equipping students with the tools they need to be successful and financially prepared for life post-graduation should be a core goal in our education system and this bill is an important step towards reaching that goal,” said Rep. Steffen.
