Madison, WI – Today, State Representative David Steffen (R-Howard), voted in favor of the Legislature’s 2023-2025 biennial budget proposal. The proposal was crafted over the past several months by the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee and is the product of extensive input from residents across the state.

“Today, I was proud to vote ‘yes’ on a bill that balances investing in our state’s key services like education, transportation and public safety, while at the same time delivering a $4.4 billion tax cut to the hardworking taxpayers of Wisconsin,” said Rep. Steffen.

The 2023-2025 biennial budget proposed by the Legislature contains a number of landmark investments including $1.2 billion in K-12 education, a minimum 20% funding increase for local governments, and increased starting wages for desperately needed correctional officers, district attorneys and public defenders.

“The biennial budget impacts every aspect of state government, from workforce development, to healthcare, to our natural resources. During a budget cycle when our state boasted an unprecedented surplus, we chose to wisely invest in our core responsibilities, pay off debt and return the remainder back to its rightful owners, the taxpayers,” said Rep. Steffen.

Throughout this budget cycle, Rep. Steffen worked directly on a number of district and constituent priorities to ensure their inclusion in the spending bill. He authored an amendment to provide $2 million to Discover Green Bay to help cover costs associated with the 2025 NFL draft, secured funding for various local transportation projects including the Southern Bridge Project in Brown County, advocated for focusing new local funding on public works and safety, and championed funding for the lifesaving newborn screening program.

The budget bill was passed by the state Senate earlier this week and will now move to the Governor’s desk for review.
