MADISON, WI —During yesterday’s floor session, Rep. Shelia Stubbs voted in favor of passing the shared revenue bill package. Rep. Stubbs released the following statement:
“Yesterday the Wisconsin State Legislature passed the debated shared revenue bill package. It took time and much negotiation among our Governor and GOP legislative leaders for a package of legislation to be produced that could garner my support. While this bill package is certainly not the final product I would have hoped for, I did choose to vote in favor. I follow the lead of my trusted Governor, who I know struck the best possible deal given the current unbalanced power dynamic in our legislature.”
“As someone who has spent a significant portion of her career supporting local governments in an elected capacity, I know how important robust state funding is for our cities, villages, towns, and counties. I take the needs of our counties and municipalities incredibly seriously, as local government is the bedrock of any community. I understand many of the concerns brought up in response to this package of legislation and I can assure my constituents that it is my mission to address the gaps created by the passage of this imperfect bill. However, in many of the areas I initially had concern, amendments were made to address such issues.”
“There are ongoing GOP-lead attacks against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives across our state and some of this programming will suffer under the passed legislation. I will always champion DEI efforts and do not intend to let one bill package diminish the work we have done to make Wisconsin a more equitable state. Ultimately, I know that without participating in negotiations, my Republican colleagues would have passed a bill package that cause much more pain to our state. This is why I am strong believer in producing bipartisan legislation, despite the frustration these efforts may bring.”
“It has taken our state several years to take action to properly fund our communities. While it is always disappointing to pass a bill package that does not fully satisfy our requirements, we must always remember that democracy requires compromise. There will be ample opportunity in the future to continue to work towards a more perfect union, but for now, we must accept this legislation and appreciate the provisions created that will benefit many of our state’s local communities.”
