MADISON – Today, an amendment expanding universal background checks for firearms was rejected by Legislative Republicans on a party line vote. Representative Subeck released the following statement in response.

“Today, Republicans talked a good game on public safety, but when given the chance, they rejected an opportunity to act to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals. Closing the background check loophole is a common sense measure to prevent felons from getting their hands on firearms in the first place.

The vast majority of Wisconsinites, including gun owners, support closing the background check loophole because they know that requiring background checks prevents gun violence. It should not matter where or from whom a firearm is purchases – A simple background check to ensure the purchaser can legally own a gun is good for public safety.”
