Madison, WI – Senator Cory Tomczyk (R-Mosinee) issued the following statement regarding budget vetoes:
“I am extremely disappointed by the Governor’s actions. Governor Evers’s use of the line item veto brazenly harms the people of Wisconsin.
Almost all of the tax cuts passed by the legislature, more than $2.7 billion for middle class, hardworking Wisconsinites were stripped out of the budget. While my colleagues and I voted to return more than $500 per filer, the Governor decided that $37 was plenty for the hardworking people of Wisconsin. Households making more than $34,030 were told by the Governor to shove off and accept a fraction of what was passed by the legislature.
This will put our state at a significant disadvantage as we continue to struggle to retain and recruit workers and businesses who can simply relocate to nearly any other state in the nation and see their tax burden decrease. Even Illinois has a lower income tax rate than Wisconsin.
Even more distressing, the Governor decided to create a compounding property tax increase for the next 400 years. (Yes, 400 years!) The resulting increase will not only negate the pittance of income tax relief that the Governor decided to retain in the budget, but actually result in a substantial tax increase for residents across Wisconsin. Governor Evers’s actions today will raise your taxes.
This is a sad day for our state and the Governor should be ashamed of himself.”
