Madison, WI – Rep. Robert Wittke, issued the following statement on today’s launch of Right to Read legislation:
“Literacy has been my passion and focus during my tenure in the State Legislature. Too many young people cannot read and we must do more to help turn the tide after decades of poor performance.”
“I’ve toured many schools and in meeting with teachers and administrators I have learned that three key components to helping our students learn to read and read more proficiently include: Better screening of students; Quality reading materials; Teacher training. The literacy bill we’ve
announced today hits the mark on all these components. Once this bipartisan bill passes, substantial resources to pay for materials and training will be included in the state budget.”
“I am pleased to support the Right to Read bill because it truly focuses on students and their success rather than on systems. I believe the standards set forth in the Right to Read bill will help students be successful.”
