MADISON, WI – In a 4-3 decision announced earlier today, the Wisconsin Supreme Court found that current state legislative maps violate the state constitution because many districts “are not composed of contiguous territory.” The state’s highest court ordered the Wisconsin Legislature to redraw state legislative maps before the 2024 election. The court also instructed the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature and Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, to implement a new legislative map that complies with the state’s constitution.

RepresentUs Wisconsin State Director Amanda Pustz issued the following statement in response:

“We commend the Wisconsin Supreme Court for its historic decision declaring the state’s legislative maps unconstitutional. For more than a decade, Wisconsin’s maps have been one of the country’s most extreme examples of partisan gerrymandering, which has undermined the state’s democracy and eroded faith in its government. We look forward to a new day when Wisconsinites can go to the polls knowing their voices will be heard.

“Today’s victory is long overdue, but it was not pre-ordained. We would like to thank our partners in the Fair Maps Coalition, who have worked tirelessly to make it a reality. We would also like to thank the many faith leaders, small business owners, educators, and other Wisconsinites who have joined us in demanding a better democracy. While today’s ruling is a massive step forward, we remain committed to fighting for a lasting solution: fully nonpartisan redistricting.”
