MILWAUKEE – Workers across industries with the Service Employees International Union and the Fight for $15 and a Union are set to rally and march in Milwaukee near the Fiserv Forum ahead of the RNC Primary Debate on Wednesday, August 23, issuing a united demand for candidates to prioritize the needs of working people as election season kicks off.
Workers across Wisconsin and beyond are demonstrating their collective power as voters, demanding that every person — no matter their race, identity or ZIP code – have a voice on the job and in our democracy. Joined by local allies and workers from battleground states, participants will uplift Unions for All as a solution that will put power back in the hands of workers, not corporations, and rebalance the scales of our rigged economy. As GOP candidates crowd the debate stage, workers will emphasize how each of them are putting corporate interests over the well-being of working families, calling on them to expand the freedom to form unions, raise the wage floor, and make healthcare more affordable.
From UPS to Starbucks, fast-food restaurants to airports, hospitals, and beyond, workers have created unstoppable momentum in recent years. Now, they are gearing up to vote for candidates who will take action and champion workers’ demands in the halls of power.
“There’s no room in our democracy for candidates who consistently prioritize their egos and their corporate cronies over working people. These GOP candidates don’t share our values, which is why we’re ready to vote for real worker champions up and down the ballot,” said Jay Klamer, registered nurse at UW Health in Madison and SEIU Wisconsin member. “Last year, working people made history by electing leaders in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan who strengthened workers’ union freedoms, empowered long-term care workers to have more say over pay and benefits, and improved public services for working families. This Spring, we stood up for democracy by putting Justice Janet Protasiewicz on the WI Supreme Court. And this election, like never before, we will be organizing, taking to the streets, and demonstrating our collective power in the workplace and at the ballot box.”
