MADISON – State Senator Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) released the following statement on the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

“This week we should have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court case that stated that women have the fundamental right to make choices about their bodies. It stated that the decision whether to continue or end a pregnancy belongs to the person, not the politicians. Instead, we are faced with an 1800s era criminal abortion ban that treats women like they are second-class citizens.

“Last week I was proud to stand next to Governor Evers as Democrats introduced legislation to create an advisory referendum on the restoration of reproductive freedom in Wisconsin. We know that a majority of Wisconsinites support this but my Republican colleagues refuse to take up any legislation on this topic. We need a referendum so that the people of Wisconsin can declare once and for all their support of abortion rights.

“Abortion is healthcare. It is a fundamental human right that no politician should be able to interfere with. This is not the future we promised our children – a future where our children have fewer rights than we did. My Democratic colleagues and I will never stop fighting until reproductive freedom is returned to Wisconsin.”
