MADISON – Today, Assembly Republicans announced that they will use a procedural maneuver to jam a redistricting bill through the State Assembly on Thursday, September 14. Senator Mark Spreitzer released the following statement:
“Speaker Vos doesn’t do anything unless it benefits him and his gerrymandered Republican majority. Speaker Vos and the gerrymandered Republican majority have had more than a decade to bring a nonpartisan redistricting bill to the floor, and have refused at every opportunity.
“It is disingenuous for Speaker Vos and the gerrymandered Republican majority to pretend to support nonpartisan redistricting now – when they are on the verge of having their gerrymander thrown out by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Because the current gerrymandered Republican majority in the Assembly (and Senate supermajority) is so disconnected from the people of Wisconsin, there can be no legitimate or nonpartisan redistricting process that originates in the current legislature.
“I continue to support nonpartisan redistricting, and we should enshrine an independent process in the Wisconsin Constitution to prevent future legislative meddling. First, we must elect a legislature that is actually representative of the people of Wisconsin. The best opportunity to do that comes from the existing case challenging the constitutionality of the current gerrymandered maps in the Wisconsin Supreme Court.”
