Madison, WI – Today, the Wisconsin Senate convened to take action on several pieces of legislation. Among the proposals passed were Senate Bill 117 (SB 117) and Assembly Bill 55 (AB 55). SB 117 would amend the Wisconsin public records law to improve its enforcement mechanism, while AB 55 would increase the penalties for reckless driving offenses. Senator Duey Stroebel (R – Cedarburg) issued the following statement in response to today’s floor session:

“First, I would like to thank Pastor Randy Raasch of First Immanuel Lutheran in Cedarburg for delivering the opening prayer to the Senate chamber. It was an excellent message, and was well received by all.”

“I was pleased with the bipartisan support and unanimous passage of SB 117, a bill Representative Novak and I introduced. If signed into law, the bill would restore longstanding precedent to ensure our public records law functions as intended when a government actor gets taken to court for violating it. This bill realigns Wisconsin statutes to ensure there is accountability when taxpayer-funded entities attempt to skirt the law.”

“In response to the troubling increase in reckless driving in Milwaukee and surrounding communities, Representative Donovan and I introduced AB 55 to establish a stronger deterrent against individuals who endanger public safety through blatant disregard for the rules of the road. This bill effectively doubles the current law penalties for reckless driving, in addition to applying the existing surcharges for OWI offenses to individuals found guilty of reckless driving. After passing through both houses with overwhelming bipartisan support, the bill will now be placed on Governor Evers’ desk for approval.”

Senator Stroebel represents the 20th Senate District which includes parts of Ozaukee, Washington, Fond du Lac, Calumet and Sheboygan Counties.
