Madison, WI — State Senator Eric Wimberger (R-Green Bay) led his Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) colleagues in creating a dedicated PFAS Trust Fund to address contamination across the state. This $125 million fund is a part of the committee’s plan for the Department of Natural Resources in the state budget. In response to today’s action, Senator Wimberger released the following statement:
“The projected federal drinking water standard for PFAS is lower than the current state standard, and once that is in place our state and local communities will be bound to treat and remediate below that level.
“Before JFC’s action to create a PFAS Trust Fund, Wisconsin had no dedicated appropriation to help landowners, municipalities and local businesses with the substantial financial and regulatory burdens associated with treating and addressing PFAS contamination, even for those who were unaware or didn’t contribute to the contamination in the first place.
“Today’s action will help even while Governor Evers and the Department of Natural Resources continue to allow the spreading of PFAS-laden biosolids on our state’s farm fields – exacerbating a problem they say they are trying to address.
“I am proud of the work done today to provide relief for those working to address PFAS contamination in their homes and communities.”
