MADISON – Last week, Senator Jeff Smith (D-Brunswick) joined Wisconsin Senate Democrats in sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu (R-Oostberg), requesting that he remove his appointee Bob Spindell from the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

Democrats had previously called for Spindell to step down following statements he made bragging about successfully suppressing the Black and Brown vote in Milwaukee. Spindell has not yet resigned and Senator LeMahieu has yet to respond to the letter. Senator Smith released the following statement:

“Bob Spindell is not fit to be a member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission. We again call for Senator LeMahieu to remove him. Our public officials should be held accountable for their words and actions, especially those charged with administering our elections.

“Voter intimidation has no place in our elections. That’s why I introduced a voter protection bill last session that would have increased penalties for voter suppression. My Democratic colleagues and I will continue to support the independence of the Wisconsin Elections Commission and stand up for free and accessible elections.”

The 31st Senate District includes all of Buffalo, Pepin and Trempealeau counties and portions of Pierce, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson and St. Croix counties.
