WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) released a statement after voting to support the Fiscal Responsibility Act, legislation to limit the future growth of government spending, save taxpayer dollars, grow the economy, and responsibly raise the debt ceiling.

“Washington’s out of control spending is harming American families through higher prices and more debt. Fiscal stability and sanity are achievable through reasonable, responsible, and sensible reforms. This legislation is the first step in the right direction. These reforms to limit spending, save taxpayers money, and grow the economy are positive. This bill will protect Social Security, Medicare, and veterans too. These are the commonsense reforms the American people want to see. This legislation is an important start to the work we have ahead.”

Background:

H.R. 3746, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, will raise the debt limit while cutting discretionary spending by $40 billion and limiting spending growth in the future. It also claws back $1.4 billion in IRS funding and rescinds nearly $29 billion in unspent COVID-19 pandemic emergency funding. The Fiscal Responsibility Act will help to grow the economy by codifying important permitting reforms for critical infrastructure, expanding sensible work requirements from able-bodied adults without dependents under federal welfare programs, ensuring more workers get back to work.

H.R. 3746 supports Americans on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and supports all veterans receiving health care at the VA. This legislation will maintain or increase funding for all of these vital programs in addition to supporting a robust national defense budget.
