MADISON, Wis. — Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade and brought back Wisconsin’s 1849 near-total abortion ban.
Today, Wisconsinites live under a draconian 1849 abortion ban that prohibits abortion in cases of rape and incest and threatens to criminally prosecute doctors for providing life saving health care. This law was enacted seventy years before women had the right to vote and twelve years before the Civil War. The overturning of Roe v. Wade has become a matter of life or death for women in Wisconsin.
Since the overturning of Roe, Tammy Baldwin has worked hard to restore Americans’ rights and freedoms. Her bill, the Women’s Health Protection Act, would codify the right for every woman across the country to make their own health care decisions into law. She is also working to pass legislation that protects contraception access and protects Wisconsin women’s right to travel across state lines to get abortion care.
“I promise I will keep fighting to make sure that all women, no matter where they live, have the freedom to make their own health care decisions,” said Tammy Baldwin in a video released this morning.
One Year Without Roe
Tammy Baldwin here on a sad and tragic anniversary that impacts millions of women across our state.
Today marks one year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
In one day, we were sent back 50 years in time.
Millions of Americans woke up to find they were now second-class citizens who had fewer rights than their parents and grandparents did.
And in some states, like my home state of Wisconsin, draconian abortion laws went back into effect.
Right now, women in Wisconsin are living under an 1849 criminal abortion ban that doesn’t allow exceptions for rape and incest and could result in doctors and nurses being sent to jail for doing their jobs.
It’s heartbreaking.
It’s infuriating.
But one year later, we’re working to take back our rights.
This year, I introduced my Women’s Health Protection Act to guarantee every woman in the country the freedom to make her own health care decisions.
It restores the rights we lost and we have more senators on that bill than ever before.
I promise I will keep fighting to make sure that all women, no matter where they live, have the freedom to make their own health care decisions.
Thanks for being with me.
