MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved critical incident in Madison, Wis. that occurred on the afternoon of Friday, February 24, 2023.

At approximately 4:08 p.m., officers from the Madison Police Department attempted to apprehend a wanted subject at a business in the 3500 block of E. Washington Avenue in the City of Madison. During the interaction, the subject produced a weapon. One officer attempted to use a taser on the subject without success. Another officer discharged their weapon in the direction of the subject. The subject then barricaded themself in a bathroom. Officers heard gunfire in the bathroom and later found the subject deceased.

No members of the public or law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.

The involved officers from the Madison Police Department have been placed on administrative assignment, per department policy.

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, Wisconsin State Patrol, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
