The Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service is thrilled to welcome Dr. Neamat Nojumi as a new Senior Fellow on Transatlantic Relations.

Dr. Nojumi will be a featured speaker in the first installment of the 2023 New Neighbors Series, which will examine the histories and political situations in the homelands of recent newcomers in Central Wisconsin. The first event, Forced Displacement – The View from 10,000 Feet, will take place Wednesday, January 11, 7 p.m., at the UW Center for Civic Engagement in Wausau.

Dr. Nojumi served as a military commander and senior political officer for the Freedom Fighter Forces against the Soviet military invasion of Afghanistan. He went on to serve as a Senior Social Scientist and Senior Advisor to the U.S. government.

Dr. Neamat Nojumi has extended academic and policy analysis experiences on conflict transformation, international security, private sector development, globalization and democratization. He is the managing editor of The Sentinel Post.org and is affiliated with a global network of scholars and practitioners, including the American and German Business Associations.

Nojumi worked as a Senior Advisor with the U.S. government, and NATO as well as with non-governmental organizations including the United Nations, United States Institute of Peace (USIP), and the European Institute of Peace (EIP). As a professor at George Mason University, he has facilitated a Transnational Dialogue for Non-Violence which includes dozens of institutions and internationally respected figures from around the world. Nojumi’s current research interest is on the question of neutrality in the emerging international order and is focused on the role of transatlantic relations.

Nojumi is the author of number of books, and policy papers. His latest book is American State-Building in Afghanistan and its Regional Consequences: Achieving Democratic Stability and Balancing China’s Influence in Southwest and Central Asia (March 2016). He obtained a BA in American Politics and Governance from Yale University and West Hartford University, Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University, and PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University.
