The Dane County Circuit Court heard oral arguments today in Attorney General Josh Kaul’s lawsuit against Wisconsin’s abortion ban. Sheboygan County District Attorney Joel Urmanski is seeking dismissal of the lawsuit on the grounds that the plaintiffs are not threatened by prosecution under the abortion ban; he also states that, contrary to Attorney General Kaul’s statements, the different abortion laws do not conflict.
In his press briefing after the arguments were heard, Attorney General Kaul stated that his office is confident in their arguments in the suit.
Outside the courthouse this afternoon, Heather Weininger, executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life stated, “If Attorney General Josh Kaul is so confident in his arguments, why is he wasting tax dollars on this lawsuit instead of doing his job and offering an Attorney General opinion? His team of attorneys mentioned several times that this issue is one that requires timeliness so that doctors can do their jobs, but AG Kaul has not done his job to ensure clarity. He is making a political statement on the backs of Wisconsin’s unborn babies.
On the outcome of the case, Wisconsin Right to Life is hopeful for a dismissal, but the timing is uncertain.
“No matter the outcome, our work continues,” said Gracie Skogman, legislative director of Wisconsin Right to Life said. “From our perspective, every day that our law is enforced, lives are being saved and women are able to find support at Pregnancy Resource Centers across Wisconsin.”
