RACINE, WI – Today, Racine Mayor Cory Mason joined clean energy advocates and other local leaders to showcase the city’s leadership in clean energy, sustainability, and climate action. With the support of federal investments stemming from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Racine is quickly advancing solar energy deployment, expanding its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, prioritizing the construction of LEED-certified energy efficient buildings, and accelerating the electrification of the city’s municipal vehicle fleet.
Speakers highlighted how Racine’s efforts, including its Smart City project, are making the city a leader in Wisconsin’s clean energy future. With the help of critical federal investments, the city is poised to accelerate the groundbreaking of several innovative, first-of-its-kind clean energy projects. These clean energy and clean transportation investments will bolster economic growth, save taxpayers money, reduce carbon pollution, and improve the city’s air quality.
Mayor Cory Mason noted the city’s leadership in fighting climate change. “Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Racine is leading the way in building a clean energy future,” said Mayor Mason. “From our electric bus fleet to solar-powered EV charging stations, we are reducing our carbon footprint by 249 metric tons and saving taxpayers $76,000 annually. These projects are creating
good-paying jobs, fighting climate change, and boosting our local economy. This is about improving the quality of life for everyone in Racine while ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Kate Beardmore, Climate and Health Program Manager, Division of Public Health, Wisconsin Department of Health Services, focused on the public health benefits. “When we reduce harmful air pollution, we know that everyone will live longer, healthier lives. And, fewer people will develop heart and respiratory diseases, asthma attacks or lung cancer,” said Beardmore. She also said that acting on climate change reduces many of the air pollutants responsible for climate change while improving health outcomes at the same time. “Thankfully, we have the solutions to tackle climate change, like the ones Racine is undertaking, to keep everyone safe and healthy now and into the future.”
Alder Mary Land, City of Racine, District 11, emphasized the economic and job creation benefits of clean energy. “I’m a proud UAW member, and I’m happy to see these clean energy projects creating good-paying union jobs and strengthening our local economy,” said Land. “Wisconsin is proving that clean energy is not only reducing pollution but also fueling economic growth by creating sustainable, green jobs. By expanding solar energy and electrifying our public transit system, we are building a more livable and resilient city for future generations.”
Harrison Phillips, Residential Energy Specialist, Green Homeowners United, highlighted the programs that are making a real difference for working families. “When homeowners, small businesses, and communities like Racine choose clean energy solutions, they’re saving money, protecting the environment, and creating opportunities for folks who want to start or grow their career in the trades. The Inflation Reduction Act is improving the lives of working families by lifting wages and helping them save money on their energy bills. That means more money to put food on the table, and an easier time paying the daycare bill.”
Mike O’Connor, green developer of Hotel Verdant in Racine, talked about how the private sector is also a partner in advancing Racine’s sustainability efforts. “Our LEED-certified gold development has created good-paying jobs while generating
clean energy. We’re proud to be furthering the revitalization of Racine and showcasing all the city has to offer. Thanks to the hard work of Wisconsin’s leaders, the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law are making a positive impact in Racine.”
Speakers concluded by reiterating the importance of continued federal support to accelerate clean energy efforts and ensure long-term sustainability and economic benefits for Racine. Please find a recording of the event [HERE].
