MILWAUKEE — Today former President Donald Trump is delivering remarks on the economy in Waunakee and Milwaukee. Trump has threatened multiple times over the past 9 years to repeal the Affordable Care Act. He and his allies in Congress also want to dismantle the Inflation Reduction Act. Ahead of his visits, Wisconsin physicians warned about how these actions could raise health care costs for Wisconsin families and seniors.

“Mr. Trump is coming to Wisconsin today to talk about the economy, but as physicians, we’re concerned about the impact a second Trump presidency could have on health care costs for our patients,” said Dr. Michael Lutes, an emergency physician in Waunakee. “By repealing the Affordable Care Act, as he has both threatened and attempted to do multiple times, Trump would rip care away from hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites and raise premiums and out-of-pocket costs for others. Wisconsinites simply can’t afford a second Trump term.”

Dr. Kathleen Burchby, a pediatrician in Milwaukee, said,  “We don’t need to wonder what would happen to health care costs under a Trump presidency because we’ve already experienced it. Mr. Trump’s repeal of the ACA’s individual mandate increased health insurance premiums by thousands of dollars, making health care unaffordable for middle-income families. The Trump Administration also cut subsidies to insurance companies offering coverage on the exchanges. That move prompted insurance companies to raise premiums to cover those costs, which then increased federal premium subsidies — leaving taxpayers on the hook. Mr. Trump can’t talk about the economy today without talking about the devastating impact his policies have on health care costs.”

Dr. Kyle Swanson, a neurosurgeon practicing in Milwaukee said, “Mr. Trump has made no secret that he wants to get rid of the Inflation Reduction Act – and the consequences if he succeeds will affect patients and their families. Because of the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare successfully negotiated significant savings on 10 of the most expensive, commonly prescribed drugs that our patients depend on to stay healthy and enjoy a good quality of life. Seniors’ prescription drug costs will be capped at $2,000 dollars per year starting next year – savings that Mr. Trump wants to take away.”
