MADISON — Following U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin’s years-long decision to withhold her life partner and New York City private wealth manager Maria Brisbane’s assets and client list from public view, the Hovde campaign is formally calling for Baldwin to disclose those details to Wisconsinites. Baldwin can voluntarily disclose this information at any time and other married U.S. senators with spouses in similar professions disclose their assets.
“Sen. Baldwin’s partner, Maria Brisbane, advises the uber wealthy on industries regulated by Baldwin, creating a massive conflict of interest that merits further investigation. Sen. Baldwin should immediately disclose her partner’s assets and client list — the people of Wisconsin deserve transparency.” – Hovde spokesman, Zach Bannon
The New York Post recently reported on the appearance of significant conflicts of interest that could arise as a result of Baldwin’s and Brisbane’s relationship. The Post highlighted the $1.3 million D.C. home the two purchased together, Baldwin’s role as chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, and Brisbane’s practice of investing her ultra rich clients’ money in industries Baldwin regulates in the U.S. Senate.
Baldwin’s campaign has thus far refused to provide transparency when it comes to how the couple avoids conflicts of interest. Baldwin’s actions prove hypocritical when compared to her past statements. In 2015, Baldwin stated “the American people can’t afford to have government officials in the pocket of the financial industry that they are charged with overseeing.”
