Green Bay, WI— Recently, Dr. Kristin Lyerly challenged her opponent Tony Wied to televised debates in Wisconsin’s 8th congressional district. In response, WBAY and the nonpartisan Mauthe Center sent a debate proposal to both campaigns, to which the Lyerly campaign promptly accepted. Despite expressing interest in this specific proposal and saying they planned to debate, the Wied campaign has failed to continue conversations with WBAY and the Mauthe Center. Thus, in lieu of a formal debate, the Lyerly campaign is now set to participate in a forum at the Mauthe Center on September 27th.
While Dr. Kristin Lyerly has been barnstorming Wisconsin’s 8th district, meeting voters where they are and discussing the issues most important to them, Tony Wied is nowhere to be found. Dr. Lyerly has been speaking with northeast Wisconsinites about her plans to address the exorbitant cost of living, high cost of fuel, and the protection of reproductive freedoms. We don’t know where Tony Wied stands on any of these issues or how he plans to address them.
“It’s disappointing, but unsurprising, that the Wied campaign did not follow through with the debate proposal they had initially expressed interest in,” said Lyerly campaign spokesperson Kurt Frewing. “The people of northeast Wisconsin deserve acknowledgment and accountability – not evasiveness and games. So, the Lyerly campaign asks: ‘Where is Tony Wied?’”
The voters of Northeast Wisconsin deserve a robust debate between the two candidates who are vying to represent them in Congress. Clearly, there is only one who shows up and possesses the courage to answer to voters – that’s Dr. Kristin Lyerly.
