Racist, rude, crass, and uniformed.

Sunday in Manhattan, Donald Trump had a closing message to Latinos and Puerto Ricans, in which a surrogate publicly called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” and disparaged Latinos across the country.

This should come as no surprise from the guy who floated “selling” Puerto Rico off, abandoned the island in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, and says immigrants are “poisoning the blood of this country.” He continuously attacks EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US.

Furthermore, to simply jumble histories and people together isn’t funny, especially at the expense of those who have been U.S. citizens since 1917. People that have fought, and sometimes paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, to be compared to trash speaks volumes of the person that would give a platform to such negative rhetoric. Being a proud U.S. citizen of Puerto Rican decent, I can only state that: When someone shows you who they are, believe them.  When someone tells you what they think about you, you should believe them too.

I am hopeful that after November 5th this country can focus on what binds us together as Americans, and not on commentary that is divisive and hateful.
