Today, lifelong Madisonian and civil rights advocate Sean O’Brien announced his campaign for Madison Common Council District 16. Incumbent Alder Jael Currie will not be seeking re-election in 2025 and has endorsed O’Brien for the seat.

O’Brien issued the following statement:

“I am excited to announce my candidacy for Common Council District 16. I have lived on the East Side of Madison my entire life; I attended our city’s public schools, had my first job in a small business, and bought my first home right here in District 16.

I currently serve as the Policy and Advocacy Director at Fair Wisconsin, working closely with local leaders and policymakers to create a safer, more welcoming Wisconsin for the LGBTQ+ community. I also serve on the Richmond Hill Condo Association Board.

Now I’m running for the Madison Common Council to continue fighting for my neighbors and our values. My priorities include responsible growth, improved public transportation, protecting our environment, and more. I’m committed to listening and being a strong voice for every resident of this district.

There are some big opportunities and challenges on the horizon as Madison continues to grow, from the affordable housing crisis and climate change to accessible infrastructure and city services. I’ve never been more optimistic about Madison’s future, and I’m ready to get to work for the people of District 16.”

Alder Currie issued the following statement in support of O’Brien’s campaign.

“I am proud to endorse Sean O’Brien for District 16 Alder. I am confident in his leadership, his passion for solving problems, and his commitment to uplifting everyone’s voice. I know that he will be a strong advocate for District 16 on the council.”

O’Brien has also earned the support of Alder Derek Field, Alder Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford, School Board Member Ali Muldrow, and Common Council Vice President John W. Duncan. To learn more about Sean’s campaign, visit  www.seanformadison.com
