Madison, Wis. – Abortion bans and restrictions across the country have created chaos, confusion, and fear when it comes to reproductive health. Two years after the Dobbs decision, abortion remains front and center in Wisconsin’s elections.
Earlier this week, a candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly in the La Crosse, WI region shared his policy positions on abortion access while speaking to WisPolitics, which included support for Wisconsin’s 20-week abortion ban.
Here is what we know about 20-week abortion bans:
- 20-week bans are part of an agenda to ban all abortion. Anti-abortion politicians in Congress and in state legislatures are pushing their agenda, bit by bit, to ultimately outlaw abortion completely.
- 20-week bans are opposed by doctors. Both Physicians for Reproductive Health and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists condemn these bans.
- 20-week bans criminalize doctors. Politicians shouldn’t have the right to take options away from doctors in dangerous medical situations or prevent them from informing patients about all their health care options.
We also know that people access abortion care for many different reasons, all of which are valid.
“As a total abortion ban goes into effect in Iowa, and anti-choice legislators in Wisconsin continue to try to pass laws banning abortion and refuse to repeal the 1849 law, we need lawmakers who truly understand the issues before them and who will expand access to reproductive care,” said Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Executive Director Steven Webb II. “There’s too much at stake for lawmakers and candidates to not take the time to learn and understand reproductive health issues.”
